If the Indianapolis Colts are serious about blowing up the team that finished 2-14 in 2011 and restarting the Colts organization from scratch to try and get them to their former glory sans Peyton Manning, it's probably going to take a couple of sacrifices. The team had very few 'star' players other than Manning the last few years and WR Reggie Wayne is looking likely to leave the team with his new found UFA status and his likely destination right now seems to be the New England Patriots.
WEEI ran a scouting report on Wayne on Tuesday, heavily implying that he was interested in the Patriots job if they were willing to hire him.
He would most likely replace the ineffective Chad Ochocinco if he were to end up in New England, giving Tom Brady yet another weapon to work with after a Super Bowl run in 2011/2012. There's plenty of other places that could court Wayne's services of course as the offseason goes along, but the Patriots seem to be the early favorite if the Colts don't feel like keeping him around for Andrew Luck's service.
Watch what happens to Randy Moss during the offseason, because where he ends up is likely going to have a huge impact on where Reggie Wayne ends up. If Moss goes back to the Patriots, a team like the Minnesota Vikings or Buffalo Bills, weaker teams with WR holes that is, might try to snap him up. Of course, the problem with that scenario is that Wayne probably doesn't want to go to anyone but a contender in his advancing age as he tries to get a second ring.
The Colts front office has shown little interest in Wayne so far since season's end so until they do, speculation will continue to grow. There's always this little tidbit of a guess from that WEEI scouting report:
And then, there’s the Peyton Factor. With the two of them having spent more than a decade together, some reports indicate that Wayne would follow Manning wherever the quarterback decided to land.
Miami, Arizona or New York could see Reggie Wayne just because he follows his favorite quarterback? It's possible. And if Peyton actually somehow ends up staying in Indy, who knows?
