Feb 4, 2012 - The No. 15 Marquette Golden Eagles (19-5, 8-3) saw their seven-game winning streak snapped and chances of catching Syracuse in the Big East take a big hit in South Bend on Saturday afternoon, as they fell by 17 to Notre Dame, 76-59.
Riding a four-point lead into halftime, the Fighting Irish let Marquette hang around for the first 15 minutes or so of the second half before a 24-6 run put the game completely out of reach for the Golden Eagles.
Pat Connaughton paced the Fighting Irish with seven points during that huge run in the second half and finished with 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting (5-for-8 behind the arc) and 11 rebounds overall. Guard Eric Atkins was also instrumental during that huge run and contributed 18 points to the stat sheet.
The win was Notre Dame's fourth in a row and puts them just a half game behind Marquette in the Big East standings. Syracuse is first in the Big East at 10-1.
Notre Dame plays next on Wednesday at West Virginia.
