Hoffman Estates, IL (Sports Network) – E’Twaun Moore finished with 31 points and nine rebounds to lead 10th-ranked Purdue’s 79-60 rout of Southern Illinois in Chicago Invitational Challenge play.
JaJuan Johnson added 18 points for the Boilermakers (5-0), who will take on Richmond on Saturday.
Justin Bocot paced the Salukis (2-3) with 17 points and John Freeman added 15, but SIU turned the ball over 25 times and was limited to 39 shots in the loss.
The Salukis face Wright State on Saturday.
SIU actually held a small lead for much of the first half, and took a 26-21 edge on Freeman’s free throws with 5:04 to play. But Purdue closed the half on a 15-2 run to take control.
Moore’s three-pointer with 18 seconds left capped the rally, and the Boilermakers took a 36-28 advantage to the break.
Purdue led throughout the second half, but couldn’t run away from the Salukis until the final eight-plus minutes.
After Bocot dropped in a layup to make it a 57-47 game, Purdue went on an 11-1 burst. Moore’s three-point play with 6:22 left closed the run and gave the Boilermakers a 68-48 advantage, and they cruised the rest of the way.
Carlton Fay scored 10 for SIU…Purdue made 24-of-30 free throws…Kelsey Barlow accounted for all seven of the Boilermakers’ bench points…Purdue made 25 shots but had only eight assists.
E’Twaun Moore had a career high 31 points after a cold 1 for 9 start for the field as Purdue topped Southern Illinois 79-60 in the semifinals of the Chicago Invitational Challenge. After his slow start Moore was 9 for 9 from the field and had 20 second half points.
The Boilermakers, who led the nation in assists coming into the game, only had eight as they struggled to find their shot from the field, but defensively they turned up the pressure to make up the difference. Purdue forced 25 turnovers and held leading scorer Gene Teague to just four points for the Salukis.
JaJuan Johnson had 18 points for Purdue as the All-American asserted himself against a very physical Southern Illinois defense. The Boilermakers will now face Richmond Saturday night in the championship.
It hasn’t been pretty, but Purdue has pulled out to a 36-28 lead at halftime of Southern Illinois in the Chicago Invitational Challenge. The Boilermakers have only hit 9 of 30 field goal attempts, but htey have gotten to the free throw line and had success. Purdue id 16 of 20 from the line as they have several Salukis in foul trouble. The Boilermakers have also forced 14 turnovers.

Purdue Faces Southern Illinois in Chicago Invitational
So far on the season Purdue has played solid basketball int he friendly confines of Mackey Arena. The next three games will be their biggest test in the post Robbie Hummel Era. The Boilermakers will face Southern Illinois tonight at 8:30 in the Chicago Invitational Challenge. Tomorrow they will face wither Wright State or Richmond (an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago) in the final game, then they must travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to face the Hokies of Virginia Tech. Both of the Chicago Invitational games are being played at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, IL.
Tonight's matchup with the Salukis will be the first time that Purdue coach Matt Painter faces his former team. Painter earned his first Division I head coaching job at Southern Illinois during the 2003-04 season. He lead the Salukis to a 25-5 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance in his lone season in Carbondale before being named as Gene Keady's successor at Purdue. He was named Missouri Valley Coach of the Year for his efforts that season.
